Periodontology

Diagnosis and laser-assisted treatment of gum diseases.

A Strong Foundation for Healthy Teeth

If the foundation of a building is the ground, the foundation of a tooth is the gum. Even teeth with no decay at all can be lost to gum (periodontal) disease. That is why it matters that the gums are pink, firm and do not bleed.

Bleeding, Sensitivity, and Bad Breath

Slight bleeding while brushing, persistent bad breath, or receding gums are major warning signs. Detailed scaling and curettage (deep cleaning) aim to resolve gum inflammation.

Gum Aesthetics (Pink Aesthetics)

If a lot of gum shows when you smile (gummy smile) or the gum line is asymmetrical, procedures to adjust the gum level may be considered; suitability depends on the gum and bone structure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes gum recession?

Gum recession rarely has a single cause. The most common factors are periodontal inflammation driven by bacterial plaque and calculus, over-brushing with a hard brush or a horizontal motion, excessive chewing load from clenching and grinding, a thin gingival biotype, and the position of the tooth within the jaw bone. Smoking can accelerate the process. Which factor predominates is determined after clinical examination and periodontal measurement.

What helps with gum inflammation?

Gum inflammation originates from bacterial plaque and calculus, and it subsides once these deposits are removed. Mouthwashes and home measures may reduce bleeding and redness for a while, but they cannot dissolve hardened calculus, so professional cleaning is required for a lasting result. If the inflammation has progressed from the gum to the jaw bone, the lost support does not return on its own; radiographs and periodontal measurement establish this distinction.

What helps with gum pain?

Gum pain does not have the same cause in every patient: it may be an abscess, inflammation around a wisdom tooth (pericoronitis), food impacted between teeth, or acute gingivitis. Rinsing with warm salt water and gently cleaning the area may bring temporary relief but does not remove the cause. Swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing or pain spreading across the face should be evaluated without delay. Antibiotics should not be used without consulting a dentist.

Do receded gums grow back?

Gum tissue that has receded does not return to its former level on its own. However, once the cause is removed, further recession can usually be halted. Where coverage of the exposed root surface is indicated, surgical techniques exist; their suitability depends on the type of recession and the amount of remaining gum and bone, and can only be determined by examination.
